You’re putting a lot of money down that could go to your landlord at the end of your rental term if you’re not careful.  In order to protect your deposit, do one or more of the following things:

1) Using a video camera, document the condition of the premises.

2) Using a regular camera, take pictures of any damage already present in the apartment.

3) Use the check-in sheet that many landlords provide and take the time to fill it out completely.

Whatever you choose to do, give your landlord a copy and keep one yourself.  Then, be careful with the property!  Legally your landlord can take money out of your deposit for damages you incur.
