Subleasing a rental space is very common at MSU. Here are a couple tips if you try:
1) Remember that even if you sublet your apartment, your name is still on the lease, and YOU are responsible for any damages that your subletter incurs. So, PUT IT IN WRITING.
2) Make sure that your landlord is in agreement that you can sublet your rental space, and that they approve of whoever you choose to take your place. Most leases generally specify this, and some actually specify that you cannot sublease at all. Another reason to read the lease before you sign!
3) If the subtenant stops paying rent, contact the MSU Housing Clinic. If you have something in writing, you may have the option to take legal action. If not, they can still give you good advice on how to handle the situation.
